Marilyn has done a most fantastic job with this quilt. I am sure Jeannie will be very pleased with the results. I know that was over the moon when I saw the photos - and more than a little sad that I could not see it in the flesh.
Marilyn initially sent through some photos of a top requiring quilting. The design brief was that the quilting should flow between the pieced blocks - rather than an obvious block by block pattern.
It was not a patchwork pattern I had seen before and in order for it to 'flow between blocks' it was going to have to be drawn specifically for the unusual shape involved. With there being so much white it was crying out for a special design.
I drew and printed out several copies of the outline and put the hour and a half captured inside a plane to good use.
This design idea was one which had been in my mind for some time - it could bend around and fit into corners - gently flowing in the process. I envisioned fairy wings - gently emerging - the pearls of dew drops waiting to be kissed of in the morning sun with a soft breeze twirling around. Fanciful? - yes, but I do still love my fairy book from early childhood
One of the issues for Marilyn was going to be the placement of the feature designs. The request that the pattern should flow between blocks meant that the use of the 'Block to Boundary' feature to place the odd shaped blocks was not going to be feasible. The answer was to make the patterns p2p ones, in such a way that piecing could be used for registration. Placing of the patterns would be fast and accurate.
Once started, I took the p2p idea to an extreme - and ALL the patterns Marilyn has used for this quilt are p2p ones! - including the cross hatching in the blue areas
Thank you to both Jeannie and Marilyn for the opportunity to participate in the completion of this quilt.
