86" square
Individually, little pieces of fabric are beautiful in themselves - but together they are magnificent!
Pieces of fabric were collected over many years - especially in the years where I did my bindings from fabric on the straight grain. They were always joined on the bias - so two triangles were carefully cut from each end of each slice!
Additional pieces joined the collection from other sources as well.

In 2004 the top was pieced (this is diarised!) and in August 2012 it was quilted - with some of my nice new designs of course! I so enjoyed sewing Isabel square and Isabel triangle. I had initially planned on using arcs in the half square triangle blocks, but did not like the idea at all - very ho hum. What else could I do? I decided on the p2p Loops square and the results surpassed my expectations. This will certainly be done again in the future.
The biggest irony of all is that now I do virtually all my bindings using double folded bias - there are very few off cuts being accumulated, and as the binding on this quilt was done this way, none will be coming from it!
I have just done an add up - there are 1012 half square triangle blocks, 916 squares - so 2940 pieces!
Very little dust was left in the making of this quilt.

This quilt won Excellence for Longarm Quilting in the Wellington Quilters Guild 2012 Exhibition.
Quilting Patterns Used
- Squares of half square triangles: Loops sq a p2p
- Remaining small triangles along stars arms: Loops tri a p2p
- Cream border: Cable 3 bdr & cnr (2)
- Background squares: Isabel sq a
- Background triangles (2 repeats): Isabel tri b p2p
Tips & Info
- as the star here is a Sawtooth or Rising Star the background squares and the background triangles each have the same area - but formatted differently. Therefore to keep the same density quilting in each I used patterns which equated to the same number of triangles
- the square is one which is made up of 4 triangles and
- the large triangle area has (effectively) 4 triangles in it as well - the placing of the p2p loops pattern in the half square triangle blocks was done extremely quickly, and while sewing took a little longer than the traditional arc - one could walk away and leave it to it - plus it looks wonderful!
- for the p2p loops:
- in the star arms I followed the seam line within the blocks
- around the border I zig-zagged from the corner of one block across to the corner on the other side of the next. It mean that in every second block the straight stitches at each end of the loops could be seen on the cream background - but it does not detract at all. - the cable was a little trickly. I forgot that I could have used the grey morphing handles(!!) (Statler), so I gently manipulated the fabric when it came to the border repeats joining onto the corners. It worked well in the end.
